Our mission is to make awesome photography easy, by making tools that get out of the way of being more creative.
We believe photographers can better improve their craft when technology is no longer a mental barrier to feeling, seeing, and expressing. Photography comes from the heart, and behind every magical photograph is a perfect symphony where art and technology become one.
The Birth of Magmod. Our Kickstarter History.
In April 2013, Spencer Boerup woke up one morning (after shooting a long wedding) with an idea of gelling flashes instantaneously. After a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (and money!), Spencer began prototyping his ideas for MagMod. After multiple rounds of tweaks and tests, he launched MagMod (with the MagGrip, MagGel, and MagGrid) on Kickstarter to raise funding for mass development.
MagMod reached its $35,000 Kickstarter funding goal in less than 5 hours, and completely obliterated this goal by raising over $210,000 in 30 days. MagMod was officially born, and ever since then we’ve been developing new products and expanding the company.
On our one-year anniversary in October 2014, we returned to Kickstarter to launch the MagSphere, MagBounce, and MagSnoot. Again, photographers responded in droves and helped us raise over $310,000 in 30 days with enthusiastic fans in over 90 different countries. Since 2013, MagMod is widely accepted by photographers worldwide as the fastest, easiest, simplest, and strongest speedlite modifier system ever created.
The MagMod Satisfaction Guarantee
MagMod is backed up with a no-nonsense 90 day Satisfaction Guarantee. If for any reason you do not

Spencer invented MagMod after a long and successful career as a wedding and portrait photographer in Tucson, AZ. His brain is swimming with awesome ideas that we can’t wait to bring to life. While he’s passionate about photography, his favorite role is at home as a husband and father to two adorable daughters. A serious car enthusiast, Spencer loves spontaneous road trips. And Mario Kart. He also enjoys serving others in his community and church.
As B2B Sales Director, Travis manages relationships with MagMod’s distributors. He’s got mad people skillz, and if we had a Team MagMod yearbook, Travis would win every vote including “biggest kid in the group,” “easiest to scare,” and “most likely to convince an invading alien army to call off an attack.” He enjoys spending time with his family, especially as a youth basketball coach (Go, NYS Tucson Tar Heels!). He’s also an accomplished wedding and portrait photographer with hundreds of shoots under his belt.
Trevor is our Operations Team Leader. A walking Swiss Army Knife, he manages supply chain, logistics, customer service and looks at a ton of data. His Excel spreadsheet wizardry is unmatched. Fun Fact: Trev is partially color-blind. But that doesn’t stop him from being a wicked talented photographer who’s run a successful wedding photography business for years. Trevor and his wife, Ari, have two adorable golden-haired children who resemble Shirley Temple.
JJ leads our Growth Team, managing MagMod’s marketing strategy and creative direction. A former full-time Youtuber, he’s the dude behind a lot of the early MagMod videos. Ask him about his job, and he’ll say “MagMod is the best place to work, EVER!” You know he means it since he has the distinction of having held the most job titles of any team member since joining the company. In the past, JJ worked as a wedding videographer and with Travis as a second-shooter. He’s also a doting dad, loving husband and Elder Scrolls fanatic. If MagMod was a boy band, JJ would be Justin Timberlake.
Timothy leads our Product Development Team, focusing his brain juices on the creation of awesome new magnetic, modular gear. In the past, he’s also been part of our order fulfillment and marketing teams. Timothy loves photographing weddings and high school seniors, which he still actively does in Arizona, Colorado and Nebraska. He’s also passionate about Bitcoin. And trains. And his wife and three kids. We can always count on him to make us laugh our faces off.
Kendle is our Customer Success Superhero, and—as her title implies—she’s pretty awesome at it. She loves making people happy and hopes she can leave everyone with a smile. A Tucson native, Kendle assisted Spencer for years on photo shoots, is the world’s best aunt and holds a degree in Fine Arts. She has an incredible talent and a budding business as a cake artist. Seriously, she could be on a TV show for this and would win everything. (Hey, Food Network: have your people call our people!)
Adrian is our Bookkeeper and has a degree in Business Management from Northern Arizona University. A Tucson native, Adrian went to Sabino High School (with Spencer!) and loves serving in her church community. At home, she rocks an embroidery machine like a boss, and her bomb dot com pillows now grace the couches at MagMod HQ. She and her husband have three adorable kiddos. She loves being a mom and really loves going to Disneyland with (or without) her kids!
JD slays as MagMod’s photographer and videographer. When he’s not crisscrossing the country to shoot our videos (or at his desk glued to Adobe Premiere), you can find him whipping up advertisements, signage and other visual marketing material for the Growth Team. Outside of work, JD keeps busy with outdoor adventures and his photography business. He shoots weddings, portraits, and even follows our police and emergency workers as a photojournalist.
Tim is our intrepid eCommerce Manager and Web Developer. He’s a former Army Ranger who used to jump out of airplanes, so managing our website, sales data and automated marketing systems is no big thang to him. In a former life, Tim also worked in finance and owned a music store. Thus, he loves guitars and vintage amps. He also loves his wife and two boys. We’ll give you $5 if you can make him laugh.
Aaron manages Order Fulfillment. He knows how much inventory we have at any given point, and he also knows exactly where your order is and how long it will take to get to you. Our resident Apple Genius, Aaron’s knowledge of the company from Cupertino and all of its devices is unmatched. Thus, he is our unofficial IT guy, too. Aaron is a newlywed, a new homeowner, and he’s about to be a new dad (Welcome to the Club!). He’s also a master drummer, and could probably slay the solo from YYZ. He used to have the finest beard in the office until Timothy got all mountain man on us.
Ari is, officially, our Office Admin. But a better title would probably be “Master Planner, Organizer & All-Around Wonder Woman.” The multi-talented Mrs. Crosby handles everything from screening job applicants to art directing photo shoots, planning company shindigs, coordinating travel, designing tradeshow fixtures and managing Spencer’s schedule. There is literally nothing she can’t do, which is why we entrust her with basically everything. When she’s not working her magic at MagMod, you can find her being a loving Mom to two kiddos and singing Aretha Franklin under the table.
Trevor Dayley is our MagMod Genius. (Yes, that’s his legit title.) If you want to learn how to control, shape and color your light with MagMod modifiers, he’s your guy! Having shot over 300 weddings, he has a wee bit of experience and loves sharing it with others. Trevor and his wife have six beautiful kiddos, and they dig traveling together. Once they did a month long, cross-country road trip in a minivan and not only survived, but loved every minute of the adventure. #SquadGoals.
Julia is MagMod’s Social Media Manager. If you’ve ever reached out to us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, then you’ve likely had the pleasure of chatting with her. A Renaissance woman who combines expertise from an MBA degree with experience in film & TV production (Jerry! Jerry!), non-profit and business marketing, she’s a strategic thinker and master communicator. Julia keeps us all on our toes with brain-twisting “Would You Rather Wednesday” questions and truly lives her best life every dang day. You should be jelly you don’t have a Julia on your team.
Chris does double duty as our Copywriter and Marketing Content Producer. She enjoys managing email, blog and video content and gets her jollies slipping Lord of the Rings and Parliament Funkadelic references into MagMod’s sales copy. Chris single-handedly keeps Chick-fil-A in business, and is rarely ever seen without a diet lemonade in hand. The only thing she adores more than crispy chicken nuggets and Jason Statham movies is her family. Chris loves her husband, daughter and Great Dane with a fierceness . . . even though one of them is probably at home right now eating socks.
Christopher is MagMod’s Accountant, and we’re thrilled he left the frozen Tundra of Connecticut just so he could whip our financial records into shape. Several months after moving to Arizona, he has finally thawed out. When he’s not number crunching, Chris enjoys hiking the desert trails. He’s an avid hammocker and digs the peace and solitude of Mother Nature. Chris also enjoys serving in his church, competing for bed space with his cats and throwing legendary game nights with his wife. Settlers of Catan, anyone?
Shane is our Freight & Supply Chain Manager. Much like his homeboy Trevor C., Shane enjoys a Beautiful Mind-style relationship with Excel. He wields a mighty spreadsheet, analyzing data to help us manage inventory and track the transportation of raw goods and materials that eventually turn into finished MagMod gear. Shane is retired Air Force, where he managed Air Transport & Logistics. Living that highly organized numbers wizard life is kinda his jam. Outside of work, Shane is a loving husband and father of two. When his kids wanted lightsabers for Christmas, Shane administered a very scientific test which determined that his son, like his wife, is pure Jedi. His daughter takes after him; she’s 100% Sith.
Scott supports MagMod’s retailers, managing accounts and helping train sales reps. He and our Wholesale Director, Travis, are a formidable team with people skills for days. (They are so in sync we sometimes refer to them as Travis Scott. This is highly amusing to the hip hop fans among us.) Years of experience in the hospitality industry have clearly only strengthened Scott’s naturally friendly ‘tude. He once worked at Disney World as a performer on a ride involving movie sets, costumes and explosions. We’ve seen the video evidence, and none of us are shocked that he fit right in at the Happiest Place on Earth. Scott’s creativity and kindness are what make him an awesome wedding photographer (He’s been voted “Best of Tucson!”). He’s also a loving husband and father.
Dan has the best dance moves in the office. Hands down. As our Special Teams guy, there’s nothing he can’t do. From restocking and maintenance to packaging products, managing snail mail, supporting social media and making Costco runs, he does it all. And does it with pizazz. He is the only MagMod team member to own a Google Pixel phone. We tease him for it, but secretly worry he is cooler than the rest of us. Dan is currently in escuela, studying Architecture and will graduate in 2021.
