Our mission is to make awesome photography easy, by making tools that get out of the way of being more creative.
We believe photographers can better improve their craft when technology is no longer a mental barrier to feeling, seeing, and expressing. Photography comes from the heart, and behind every magical photograph is a perfect symphony where art and technology become one.
The Birth of Magmod. Our Kickstarter History.
In April 2013, Spencer Boerup woke up one morning (after shooting a long wedding) with an idea of gelling flashes instantaneously. After a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (and money!), Spencer began prototyping his ideas for MagMod. After multiple rounds of tweaks and tests, he launched MagMod (with the MagGrip, MagGel, and MagGrid) on Kickstarter to raise funding for mass development.
MagMod reached its $35,000 Kickstarter funding goal in less than 5 hours, and completely obliterated this goal by raising over $210,000 in 30 days. MagMod was officially born, and ever since then we’ve been developing new products and expanding the company.
On our one-year anniversary in October 2014, we returned to Kickstarter to launch the MagSphere, MagBounce, and MagSnoot. Again, photographers responded in droves and helped us raise over $310,000 in 30 days with enthusiastic fans in over 90 different countries. Since 2013, MagMod is widely accepted by photographers worldwide as the fastest, easiest, simplest, and strongest speedlite modifier system ever created.
The MagMod Satisfaction Guarantee
MagMod is backed up with a no-nonsense 90 day Satisfaction Guarantee. If for any reason you do not
enjoy your purchase, please return it in its original condition for a full refund.
Spencer invented MagMod after a long and successful career as a wedding and portrait photographer in Tucson, AZ. His brain is swimming with awesome ideas that we can’t wait to bring to life. While he’s passionate about photography, his favorite role is at home as a husband and father to two adorable daughters. A serious car enthusiast, Spencer loves spontaneous road trips. And Mario Kart. He also enjoys serving others in his community and church.
As B2B Sales Director, Travis manages relationships with MagMod’s distributors. He’s got mad people skillz, and if we had a Team MagMod yearbook, Travis would win every vote including “biggest kid in the group,” “easiest to scare,” and “most likely to convince an invading alien army to call off an attack.” He enjoys spending time with his family, especially as a youth basketball coach (Go, NYS Tucson Tar Heels!). He’s also an accomplished wedding and portrait photographer with hundreds of shoots under his belt.
Trevor is our walking Swiss Army Knife, he manages supply chain, logistics, sourcing and looks at a ton of data. His Excel spreadsheet wizardry is unmatched. Fun Fact: Trev is partially color-blind. But that doesn’t stop him from being a wicked talented photographer who’s run a successful wedding photography business for years. Trevor and his wife, Ari, have two adorable golden-haired children who resemble Shirley Temple.
Trevor Dayley is our MagMod Genius. (Yes, that’s his legit title.) If you want to learn how to control, shape and color your light with MagMod modifiers, he’s your guy! Having shot over 300 weddings, he has a wee bit of experience and loves sharing it with others. Trevor and his wife have six beautiful kiddos, and they dig traveling together. Once they did a month long, cross-country road trip in a minivan and not only survived, but loved every minute of the adventure. #SquadGoals.
Timothy leads our Product Development Team, focusing his brain juices on the creation of awesome new magnetic, modular gear. In the past, he’s also been part of our order fulfillment and marketing teams. Timothy loves photographing weddings and high school seniors, which he still actively does in Arizona, Colorado and Nebraska. He’s also passionate about Bitcoin. And trains. And his wife and three kids. We can always count on him to make us laugh our faces off.
Adrian is our Bookkeeper and has a degree in Business Management from Northern Arizona University. A Tucson native, Adrian went to Sabino High School (with Spencer!) and loves serving in her church community. At home, she rocks an embroidery machine like a boss, and her bomb dot com pillows now grace the couches at MagMod HQ. She and her husband have three adorable kiddos. She loves being a mom and really loves going to Disneyland with (or without) her kids!
Tim is our intrepid eCommerce Manager and Web Developer. He’s a former Army Ranger who used to jump out of airplanes, so managing our website, sales data and automated marketing systems is no big thang to him. In a former life, Tim also worked in finance and owned a music store. Thus, he loves guitars and vintage amps. He also loves his wife and two boys. We’ll give you $5 if you can make him laugh.
JD slays as MagMod’s photographer and videographer. When he’s not crisscrossing the country to shoot our videos (or at his desk glued to Adobe Premiere), you can find him whipping up advertisements, signage and other visual marketing material for the Growth Team. Outside of work, JD keeps busy with outdoor adventures and his photography business. He shoots weddings, portraits, and is public safety photographer.
Aaron is our video production manager and is responsible for all video content produced by MagMod. As our resident Apple Genius, Aaron’s knowledge of the company from Cupertino and all of its devices is unmatched. Thus, he is our unofficial IT guy, too. He’s also a master drummer, and could probably slay the solo from YYZ. He used to have the finest beard in the office until Timothy got all mountain man on us.
Joe is our Supply Chain Manager, burning the midnight oil to make sure we have lots of magnets to make awesome photography easy. Fueled by coffee and hardcore punk, he's working with suppliers day and night to ensure we have plenty of the good stuff. When not at work, you'll find him out riding one of his many bikes, or backpacking the mountains around Tucson along with his best girl. But don't let all of this tough stuff fool you. He's a softie in the paws of his 6lb cat, Mina.
Every company needs a special ops team; Ben is ours. As Director of Special Projects, he swoops in to save the day when technical wizardry is needed. An unabashed outlier, our left-handed, blue-eyed, Linux-loving, Android-toting, collared-shirt wearing, non-photographer vegetarian avoids video games but does enjoy spending time with his family, reading, hiking, playing board games, giving service, and tinkering with all things tech.
