The MagStand comes in two interchangeable sizes: a 9 ft version and an 11 ft version. The 9 ft MagStand weighs approximately 5.1 lbs, while the 11 ft version weighs about 6.3 lbs. Both versions share the same design, materials, and modular system—the difference comes down to maximum height and collapsed length.

Both MagStand sizes share the same pole diameters and leg geometry, so they feel identical in the hand and offer the same strength and build quality. The difference really comes down to your desired maximum height, base width, and how portable you need your professional stand to be.

The MagStand 11 is the naturally most stable option, especially for on-location work. Its wider base provides greater stability than most traditional light stands and makes it the obvious choice for larger flashes, heavier modifiers, or situations where you want the strongest possible setup and maximum height. If you could only have one stand, this is the one we recommend!

The MagStand 9 prioritizes portability without sacrificing stability. It maintains a full 36” footprint width while packing down small enough to fit in most checked luggage sizes. If you primarily use smaller flashes and don’t need the extra height, it’s a fantastic blend of compact size and professional stability and covers most off-camera flash equipment setups with ease.

Stability is one of the core design goals of the MagStand. A wide, low-profile base provides a solid foundation, and the footprint can be adjusted depending on your environment. When working outdoors or supporting larger modifiers, using the wide footprint and adding counterweight to the integrated utility hook helps keep everything planted and secure.

The MagStand features a precision-machined stainless steel mounting stud designed to work with standard ⅝ stud, ¼-20, and ⅜ thread connections, making it compatible with the vast majority of photography and video gear. This includes speedlights, compact strobes, LED panels, small cameras, and other common accessories. If a light or accessory works on a traditional lightstand, it will work with the MagStand.

The stud also includes a flat-edge anti-rotation point to help keep gear properly aligned under load, reducing unwanted twisting during use. Non-MagMod accessories that use standard mounting threads are fully supported, giving you flexibility to integrate the MagStand into your existing setup without special adapters.

Yes. The MagStand was designed to feel intuitive right out of the box. The legs deploy and collapse with a squeeze of the base buttons, and height adjustments are handled with auto-locking buttons on each section. If you let go at any point, the stand locks automatically—making one-handed adjustments easy and helping prevent sudden drops when working solo.

Each MagStand includes a removable center pole that doubles as a handheld monopole. You can slide it out of the base in seconds using the locking lever, giving you a lightweight, mobile lighting option for fast-moving situations like receptions, events, or run-and-gun shoots.

By removing the monopole from the leg base, the MagStand 9 easily packs into a suitcase, while the MagStand 11 can also fit in larger checked bags thanks to its separable components. Depending on your suitcase size and how you pack, most photographers can fit three to four MagStand 9s in a single checked bag alongside their usual travel gear. This makes the MagStand an ideal choice for destination work and travel-heavy workflows—without sacrificing the height or stability you’d expect from a professional lightstand.
