MagMod Beauty Dish XL 20 Pro Kit — ★★★★★

I'm not exaggerating when I say the MagMod Beauty Dish XL 20 Pro Kit has completely transformed the way I shoot. From the moment I unboxed it, I knew this was different. The magnetic snap-on system? Absolute witchcraft. No more fumbling with mounts and brackets mid-session while your client awkwardly waits — it clicks on in literal seconds.

The light quality is where this thing truly shines (pun absolutely intended). The XL 20" dish throws the most buttery, wraparound light I've ever seen from a portable modifier. The beauty dish is fantastic! I love the quality of light that comes from it. I appreciate that it came with a case, grid, and diffuser also! It’s all super easy to use and it’s light weight to carry around. I used it at a wedding just before Christmas and I really like the results! The light cast was so nice during the reception! I was very pleased with being able to capture dynamic shadows and light while using it across a dance floor. It made the reception very interesting! The last time MagMod sent out a feedback form I actually suggested that they make a beauty dish (I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who suggested it). I’m glad they did because it’s a great addition to their product line!

As far as the construction goes, I noticed there was a bit of a weak spot in the welding where the flexible part meets the bowens mount. It’s not broken but it looks like overtime it could break more easily than if it had a better weld.

The gels are kind of difficult to attach to the dish. I don’t know if that’s because my gels are new, maybe they get more flexible overtime? The person in the video made it look so easy! I wish we could use magnets to attach them, I’m not sure how that effects strobes though…

The case is great! I find that I have to fidget with the gels to get them to fit correctly so I can close it. It’s a bit cumbersome but works. I wish there was a space just for the gels in the case though. The shoulder strap, zippers, and the buckle can be a little cumbersome…
