Compatibility

The MagStand was designed to be a dependable foundation for your lighting setup, no matter how or where you shoot. From compatibility with everyday gear to thoughtful design details you’ll notice over time, every part of the MagStand system was built to support real-world workflows and adapt as your needs evolve.

At the top of the MagStand is a precision-machined stainless steel mounting stud designed to work seamlessly with a wide range of photography and video gear. The stand supports equipment that uses a standard ⅝ stud, ¼-20 thread, or ⅜ thread, making it compatible with most tools photographers and creators already use. If a light or accessory works on a traditional lightstand, it will work on the MagStand.

This broad compatibility includes speedlights, compact strobes, LED panels, small cameras, microphones, and other common accessories. For speedlights, pairing the MagStand with a MagShoe is recommended for the fastest, cleanest, and most secure mounting experience.

To help prevent unwanted rotation, the mounting stud features a flat-edge anti-rotation point. This subtle but important detail helps keep your light properly aligned, even when supporting larger modifiers or working in breezy conditions. If your setup ever feels top-heavy, switching to the wider footprint or using the integrated utility hook for added counterweight can make a noticeable difference in overall stability.

While the MagStand isn’t designed for extremely heavy cinema fixtures or dedicated baby-pin–mounted lighting, it excels with the vast majority of photographic and hybrid photo-video lighting tools used in both studio and on-location environments.

Magnetic Leg Connector System

Ever tried carrying three light stands while opening a door? Or made multiple trips to your car because you could only carry one at a time?

The MagStand’s patent-pending magnetic leg connector lets you securely connect two or three MagStands together, even mixing 9’ and 11’ models, so you can carry them comfortably in one hand. Fewer trips. Less time juggling gear. More time behind the camera.

Two Interchangeable Sizes

The MagStand comes in two modular sizes: 9’ for maximum portability and 11’ for maximum height.

Not sure which size works best for you?

Need extra height for a large wedding venue or challenging outdoor shoot? The MagStand 11 Pro gives you ultimate confidence and stability with the extra reach you need.

Flying to a shoot and needing to travel light? The MagStand 9 Pro keeps your setup compact but rock-solid with stability for days.

And because the MagStand Legs and Monopole sections swap freely, you can build the setup that fits your style, your space, and your next shoot — without feeling locked in.

Both the MagStand 11 Legs + MagStand 9 Monopole fit into many standard checked bags, giving you maximum stability and maximum portability in one compact combo.

Customers Say
Customers say these light stands are sturdy, quick to set up, and easy to use right out of the box. Many praise the thoughtful design, solid construction, and compact footprint that works well in tight spaces. The push-button height adjustment and removable pole are frequently highlighted as major improvements over traditional stands. Most reviewers feel confident supporting lighting gear without worry. Some note the stands are heavier than typical models and mention a learning curve with hand placement when lowering sections. A few report minor rotational movement when heavier equipment is attached, and some wish for spring-cushioned mechanisms to prevent pinching.

    Amazingly strong and surprisingly light

The videos that say how easy it is to set up the MagStand are all true. The first time, it might not "click" but give it a bit more time and the ease of set up becomes obvious. But the weight and strength are really surprising. Carrying the 9' or the 11' (reviewed here) around the studio, each stand felt heavy, but going out in a park for a session, it didn't feel that way even though we were walking a longer distance. Plus, when the stand is extended with an Godox (Flashpoint) AD400Pro and a MagMod Beauty Dish, it feels much more stable than the 13' stand from another vendor.

    MagStand 11 Pro

I love this thing! I have used many light stands in my day but the MagStand is by far the fastest and easiest to deploy. No more twisting knobs to loosen or tighten. The built-in monopod is awesome! If I was going to design a light stand for myself, it would be this one. It is built like a tank and feels rock solid. It is well worth the investment.

    Very well designed.

Big, bulky C-Stands are durable and stable. - but at the expense of being heavy and with legs that don’t collapse.

Other stands tend to be unstable because they’re lightweight or they won’t stand up unless you extend the legs to their widest point.

Imagine the perfect middle ground: Heavy enough to not require sandbags, but not too heavy or awkward for all day event OCF use without the need for an assistant.

The problem with most stands is threefold.

First, it will be aluminum, very light weight, and easy to tip over if it’s also easy to carry and move around. Any stand under $100 will fall into this category and you’ll be sorry you didn’t spend more when it falls over and breaks your $400 flash or $100 softbox. (Which it WILL!)

Second, the footprint on very few will actually allow a reduced footprint by closing it some but still standing up. This is problematic when you want to hide it behind a subject or fit it into a tight space. These babies have WIDE footprints when you want them, but stand up even when you only partially extend them.

Three, many other stands have pistons that make closing them in a hurry a complete pain in the ass. These open and close like butter — quickly and effortlessly.

What I’ve learned from 20 years of shooting weddings, commercial and even television/movie stills is this: The perfect light stand should not be too light or too heavy. It should raise to 8 feet or more and remain sturdy, and it should NOT be pressurized because those…

    Almost great

I have the 11pro magstand. I do like this stand and the fact that it is way easier to set up than my other stands. But, because of its design, you can't turn a light just spinning one of the poles. You have to turn the stand itself, or the light itself. Which may not seem like that big of a deal, but it is. I think if you were able to turn the light, just by one of the pole segments, it would make for faster light movement.

Hey Ted! Thanks for the review. Stoked to hear MagStand is making setup easier.
Good news: you can rotate the pole to aim your light! Just flip the lever lock up at the base, rotate to where you want it, and lock it back down. That’s it. No need to move the whole stand.
It’s a different motion than you might be used to, and feedback like yours helps us see where a quick demo and maybe additional callouts on our product page would go a long way. We built MagStand to make these adjustments fast and easy so you can get back to creating. Give it a try on your next shoot and let us know what you think!
